Unlike most U.S. states, Alaska does not use the term “counties” for its first-order administrative subdivisions. Instead, the state is divided into 19 organized boroughs and 11 census areas, which together make up what might be referred to as “Alaska counties” in a general sense. The 11 census areas fall within the Unorganized Borough, which lacks a formal borough government. Alaska, along with Louisiana (which uses parishes), is unique in this administrative structure. For a complete list of boroughs and census (County) areas in Alaska, one must include both the organized boroughs and the census areas within the unorganized region.
