Captain Marvel Review: An unconventional Feminist Superhero

Story:

Carol Danvers is an air force pilot who has lost her memories and now living on an extraterrestrial planet Kree. She is seeking training from star force commander Yon-Rogg. The team is on an odyssey to pick and kill Skrull from the Universe. An event followed by another takes her to the Earth where she meets Nick Fury. Now, both look to decode her actual identity. There are several flashback moments which camouflages her mind and shadows intelligence of the power she possesses. Does she get to know about herself? Who’s the villain? How Fury lost his eyes? And, where did that pager come in Infinity war? Most importantly, who gave Carol that unimaginable powers? All these answers have well seeped into the movie.

Screenplay:

Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its superficial screenplay that keeps the audience engrossed. Here, it does not disappoint but there’s nothing extraordinary about it. The template is somehow missing here. Set in the 90s, the art direction is decent.

Direction:

The limited scope in the story also laid implications on directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck who have also co-written the screenplay along with six others. The pace of the movie lacks consistency, and apart from Carol Danvers, no one has a past besides them.

Editing:

It’s smooth and unwavering. One of the best parts of the film. Keeping it on the point and no exaggeration.

 

Acting:

Brie Larson looks superbly in control of the superhero character. She’s an unconventional feminist who’s not too opinionated and listens to others. Contrary to caped crusaders, she’s more human and vulnerable, who is overcoming her weaknesses. Brie has nicely adapted the role of an air force fighter. Her body language and straight face is a cult quality. Her expressionless face is the demand of the story. Samuel L Jackson is in full form and quite unlike Nick Fury we have seen so far. He’s funny, quirky and yeah sometimes stupid.  Jude Law doesn’t look too convincing as Yon-Rogg. He has done an average job. Rest of the cast including Annette Bening, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch and others are brilliant.

Why Watch:

See it for Carol Danvers, Goose the cat (great surprise ahead) and leeway for Endgame. Mid credit scene will astonish the viewers.
