When it comes to New York City most will say they have a love-hate relationship with it people miss it when they are away and they want to go outside when they are here we personally think that New York City is an amazing place to visit but if you live here and are part of the working class you are screwed. If you are one of those considering the move to New York City we bet you think it’s gonna be a glamorous life. Don’t you? You have seen the famous influencers living the New York Life and making it look like it’s the coolest most amazing urban paradise. However there are a few things we think you should consider before your big move. Sure New York City has got lots of good points to it but there’s a lot of bad that comes with the good and much of it is scary ugly and absolutely unbearable. Today we give you the lowdown on life in the Big Apple, that way you know exactly what you are signing up for so without further ado here are 10 things you will hate about New York City.
The noise level is insane. We can start with the typical traffic noises: cars blaring their horns, loud buses, trucks and tractor trailers and people yelling and cursing at each other. You also have the construction noise if you are not close to a construction site. We always have someone with a jackhammer drilling into the pavement. Then you have got the ones making a racket by blasting loud music out their apartment and car windows. Sometimes the music is so loud you can’t even make it out. You also get the gunshots, the police sirens, ambulance sirens, fire trucks blaring their horns and if you are lucky to live by an elevated subway line you will get to hear the trains go by every few minutes. You also get to hear different noises like your neighbors fighting upstairs and the guys dribbling their basketball in the courts across the street at 1:00 in the morning. The worst is when you have a subway performer blasting his trumpet at 8 o’clock in the morning, that perfect time when everyone is still in their zombie mode. We tell you no matter where you go you won’t be able to escape the noise.
There are people everywhere. The place is so over populated it feels third-world. You can’t walk down the street freely. Someone is always in your way. You find yourself waiting on long-ass lines for most of your life. The good stuff sells out fast you will never get the place to yourself no matter what time of day or where you go.
We are not talking about shopping and dining here because there are places in New York where you can always find a cheap deal we are talking about the cost of housing because it’s through the roof you have studios in one bedrooms going for more then $2,000 and this is on the lower end of the spectrum these are Brooklyn and Queens prices mind you in Manhattan. We are looking at $3200 and up for a studio if you want your own apartment unless you are earning $65K or more it’s not gonna happen. You will always need that roommate partner or your parents to help you pay the bills.
This is the time when millions of people are rushing into Manhattan to fill up the tall office buildings. They rush in from all over the different places: the outer boroughs, the suburbs, even neighboring states; everyone is packed like sardines into the trains and buses as they are wheeled into the big city. If you happen to live in one of those super trendy hipster neighborhoods, it will take you about five tries before you get on a train. The good thing about it though is that once you get a stop you are good there everyone is so packed they don’t even need to hold on to anything. It’s the same thing in the afternoon as well just in the recurse. This is when all the super tall buildings leave everyone back out into the streets all at the same time. It’s mayhem and gridlock all over again and again. It’ll take you a few tries before you can fit into a train or bus to get home. Be prepared to sit for hours in traffic if you are driving and no you won’t be better off in a taxi or uber in New York City. Your life will always revolve around rush hour. You don’t have a choice.
Don’t believe the picture-perfect postcards are those awesome shots from those famous instagramers they are lying to you. They are not showing you the piles of garbage overflowing from the garbage bins. They are not showing you the trash in the streets either. There are things we have seen that are so gross. We can’t even repeat things that have burned such a nasty imprint in our memory that we wish so bad that we couldn’t see or at least scrub them out of our memory. You will have beautiful tree-lined streets with pretty townhouses and brown stones that are littered with dogs all over the sidewalks. The fancy Park Avenue buildings make it a point to hose down the sidewalks every morning but by afternoon it’s back to the same old and we are talking about some of the most expensive, most astute neighborhoods. When you walk down the street you always have to watch where you are stepping. You don’t want to step into anything nasty we witnessed way too many people ruin perfectly good shoes by stepping into a big fresh surprise left on the curb. Then you have the subways and the corridors smell like old piss. There’s trash strewn all over the tracks, the walls have decade’s worth of grime caked on occasionally, there will be a biohazard leftover from a sick drunk in one of the cars. That’s when you see everyone rushing in and then quickly rushing out before the doors close.
Due to the shortage of space overpopulation and real estate being extremely expensive there’s never enough breathing room and never enough personal space for the average New Yorker. You feel cramped at home as the apartments are very tiny. You feel cramped on public transportation, cramped on the streets and cramped on the elevator. If you are claustrophobic this ain’t the place for you.
We don’t know how else to say this but MTA sucks with all the money they made from the millions of riders. We have never seen such incompetence, first of all the subways are a filthy mess that looked like it hasn’t been cleaned since the day. It was built over a century ago; the only clean stations are the new ones in the Fifth Avenue station by the Plaza Hotel. They only keep that one clean because of the rich tourists that frequent that neighborhood. We don’t see the point though because as soon as the rich tourists arrive at their destination station, they will quickly realize that the rest of the subway system is a cesspool. But the Fifth Avenue station goes to show that if the MTA gave it some effort then yes they definitely could keep every station clean anyway. The system is very old, outdated and crumbling. Trains are always breaking down your plans are always wrecked because this always some kind of crisis happening someone is always falling into the tracks, someone always has a medical emergency, there’s always a water main break, there’s always a gas leak, a fire a bomb scare, a stalled train signal malfunctions, construction ahead. What’s crazy is that your job will still expect you to show up on time, however you will always be late. Good luck to you facing that job interview after arriving 40 minutes late.
It’s nice to be able to enjoy the Four Seasons though we are not too sure how much enjoyment you will get during the winter and in the summer months both seasons can be brutal. When it comes to winter you never know what kind of year it’s going to be. Some years are mild but some are like snowstorms here and there. But most years are brutal with freezing cold temperatures and blizzards every week. As soon as everyone is out from the blizzard of a few days ago, another one shows up and dumps another two feet of snow all over again and for those crazy enough to own a car and park it on the street. No need to bother digging yourself out, the plow man is just gonna come and dump it load right back on top again. In the summer you have unbearable heat and humidity that can go on for weeks. This is when the subways turned into a free sauna and the garbage takes on a life of its own.
It’s not just a myth, it’s true people in New York are rude. They have to be they got big bills to pay with very little time as we all know time is money but New Yorkers don’t have much time. That’s the thing they are always stuck in traffic, stuck on a line or stuck in the Train. So whatever little time they do have available they try to make most of it. They very impatient with quick tempers so you better not get in their way, you better not hold up the line, you better not ask too many questions, you better not delay their meal and you have better get it right the first time otherwise you will be hearing from them and we promise you will get it earful for those who work in the New York service industry whether it’s retail or hospitality it’s usually a very rough ride.
The hustle is really New York everyone’s on the go-go-go and the up and up everyone’s got big dreams and big plans and you better not get in their way it’s all about survival of the fittest and may the best man or woman win the competition is fierce and you had better work to prove yourself. You want that promotion, you had better work, you want to land that account, you had better work you want to meet that impossible deadline. You had to do many jobs expect you to come in early, stay late and take your work home with you most of the time without extra pay. This is how those who want to get ahead can prove their worth, passion and commitment to the company. Yes, everyone is a workaholic in New York and you will be seen as lazy and left out in the cold if you are not up for the hustle.
We are gonna need a part two to this because we can think of plenty more we can add to this list. If there’s anything you would like to add to this list feel free to comment below. If you would like to read more about it check our earlier articles. One more thing: New York City is our favorite city. The purpose of this article was just to share harsh reality which no one shares.
