Massive Storm Slams NYC Subway and New Jersey: Subway Floods, State of Emergency Declared

July 15, 2025 — A powerful summer storm brought torrential rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding to New York City and New Jersey, triggering a state of emergency in both regions. The intense rainfall caused a dramatic NYC subway flood, stranded commuters, and overwhelmed drainage systems, prompting urgent flood warnings across the area.

Flash Flood Warning in Effect

The National Weather Service issued multiple flash flood warnings for New York City, New Jersey, and surrounding counties. The storm dumped up to 6 inches of rain in some areas within hours, leading to life-threatening conditions. Roads turned into rivers, and basements across the metro area filled with water.

NYC Subway Flooding Today

The MTA reported severe flooding in the NYC subway system, particularly on lines running through lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Videos circulated online showing water gushing into stations, with some platforms submerged. Transit officials warned of delays and suspended service on multiple lines due to “unsafe operating conditions.”

“Today’s NYC subway flooding is among the worst we’ve seen in recent years,” said MTA spokesperson Julie Hastings. “Crews are working around the clock to pump water and restore service.”

New Jersey Hit Hard: Flooding in NJ Prompts Evacuations

In New Jersey, towns like Scotch Plains, Elizabeth, and Newark were inundated with floodwaters. Emergency responders rescued dozens of residents trapped in their homes. Sections of the NJ Turnpike were temporarily closed due to impassable conditions.

Governor Maria Torres declared a New Jersey state of emergency early this morning, citing “unprecedented flooding in New Jersey that poses a serious threat to life and property.”

“From NJ flooding yesterday to NJ flooding today, our state has been battered,” the governor stated. “We’re coordinating with FEMA and local agencies to ensure help reaches all communities affected.”

Power Outages and Infrastructure Damage

In both NYC and NJ, the storm knocked out power to over 150,000 homes. Utility companies reported downed power lines and transformer failures. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas, where hidden dangers like open manholes and submerged debris pose serious risks.

NJ Transit and NYC Transit Disruptions

NJ Transit suspended bus and rail services in flood-prone areas due to high water levels on tracks and roadways. Commuters are being advised to check NJ news sources.

Meanwhile, NYC Transit is struggling to restore service amid ongoing water intrusion. Transit officials noted that flooding in New York subway tunnels is delaying cleanup efforts, as pumps work at full capacity.

Weather Forecast: More Rain Possible

The New York weather forecast remains concerning, with meteorologists warning of continued showers and thunderstorms through tomorrow. Saturated ground conditions heighten the risk for flash floods.

Residents across New York City, New Jersey, and the greater tri-state area are urged to heed flood warnings and stay informed via emergency alerts. Anyone in low-lying or flood-prone areas should prepare for possible evacuation.

Communities Rally Amid Crisis

Despite the devastation, neighbors are stepping up. Community centers in NJ and NYC have opened emergency shelters, while local volunteers assist in distributing food and water.

“This is a challenging time for New York City and New Jersey, but we will get through it together,” said NYC Mayor DeShawn Price during a press briefing. “Our first responders and essential workers are doing heroic work in the face of extreme conditions.”

Stay tuned to local media and official alerts for the latest updates on NYC flooding, NJ floods, and New York flood conditions. This storm is a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate resilience in urban infrastructure—especially as NYC subway flooding becomes more frequent in the face of extreme weather.
