Anindita Chaudhury Sharma: A painter par excellence

Anindita Chaudhary Sharma Painter

Art does not need a playfield to practice. It is not penurious to any resource, time, person and thought. It is in everyone’s heart, but only a few have the capability to explore, carve and emerge as an artist. Anand Gupta of The City Stuff caught with one such creator whose brush on the canvas only strikes to create lives out of colors. Each stroke is radiant and in detailing which unwraps the curtain on a human eye. The Bengaluru based suave painter Anindita Chaudhury Sharma answered the questions with eloquently and honestly. Her exemplary command on her art is exceptional. She has exhibited her paintings at several exhibitions and events. Also, several news publications have covered her work, including Kannada local newspapers and TOI. She has achieved a plethora of laurels.

The artist has drawn portraits of Bollywood celebrities like Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Varun Dhawan to name a few. Her painting of PM Narendra Modi is one of the visual spectacles.

Excerpts of her interview:-

When did you pick up the first brush?

At the age of 7

What types of paintings do you specialize in?

Realistic Oil Paintings (portraits, wildlife and landscape)

What is your process of painting?

Artist has their own way to do paintings. Unlike other artists, I always go with a proper sketch/outline and then only start with the coloring process. It helps me to make any modifications if required in the initial stage only. If it’s a portrait, mostly I will start with the eyes and try to make it as realistic as possible. I totally believe this quote: “The eyes are the window of the soul.”

How much time do you spend while creating art?

I almost spend an average of 5-6 hours a day. But again, it depends on my mood. Some Days I work for more than 10 hours a day while there will be some days in a week when I don’t even spend an hour for painting. It all depends on the painting I am working on. I get really carried away with the work if I am working on some interesting painting assignments.

How long does it take you to complete a painting?

The time required to finish the painting can vary from 1-30 days. It all depends on the complexity, detailing, size & form of the painting.

Where did you learn it, and who was your first teacher?

Since my childhood, I was passionate about colors. I would like to appreciate my first art teacher Mr. Uttam Das who gave me the strength and proper guidance I needed to take the first step toward my dreams. And today it’s all because of him I am good with my basics and have a strong understanding of colors. But I was never having any plans of choosing art as my career, and that was the reason I have entered the field of fashion designing. Along with the college studies, I continue to make paintings out of my interest. That was kind of a stress buster for me where I could forget everything and just put my thoughts on canvas. After I finished my studies, I joined one school as an art teacher as I love to be with kids. That was the time when I have started taking art seriously and planned to opt this as a career. YouTube and my interest in art helped me a lot to have a better understanding of realistic painting.

YouTube proved to be my best teacher, and I started following many foreign artists who helped me a lot. That time doing realistic painting was like a dream for me but gradually with patience and hard work now, I am able to do that art form. With every art I do, I make sure I learn something out of it. I never choose topics which are easy for me, I always challenge myself in every art and choose the difficult ones so that I can improve myself day by day. How can I forget my husband (Mr. Swapnil Sharma) to mention, he is the one who motivates me and supports me. He is the best critic I can ever get. Today whatever I am is because of him and my family who support me in every step of the way. There is a famous quote that I truly believe “Life is a journey, not a destination.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson.

So, it’s my learning phase and will always be.

Any tip for people wanting to pursue a career in your stream?

If anyone wants a career in art, then he/she should have passion, imagination, dedication & patience. Hard work and practice always help us to achieve our goal. Art has taught me to have a lot of patience. He/she should get a good knowledge of Colors and about the materials. Beginners should not lose hope in the first few attempts. One should not forget that. “There is no glory in practice, but without practice, there is no glory”. So, guys keep practicing.

What is your routine during the lockdown and your message to the public during Corona Virus Pandemic?

My routine during this lockdown is very simple. The first thing I do is taking care of my pet as soon as I wake up. I don’t forget to do some yoga and meditation after that, which keeps me fit and energetic for the whole day. I would advise everyone to do at least some physical exercise which will keep you fit. I prepare breakfast after that for my family and meantime I watch the news which helps me to be aware of current Corona pandemic situation across the globe. Later I spend my time playing some indoor games or listening to some music or watching any movie/series. After lunch, either I sleep for some time or continue watching a movie/series. Late evening, I sit for my painting work. I prefer to paint along with listening to my favorite music.

I take some gap and prepare dinner. After dinner, I again continue with my painting work. I prefer to paint during night-time as I find it peaceful late at night. I do paint till I am fully exhausted. I also make sure I give proper time to my family and my pet. So me being an Artist I utilize most of the time doing art as it’s my passion and I enjoy doing my work. I never had the feeling of being stuck at home due to lockdown. Obviously, I do sometimes miss going out, but I am happy with the fact that due to all that I could get so much time to spend with my family and my pet.

I always make sure to be in contact with my friends and family via phone. I can’t meet them physically, but they are always there for me emotionally. The entire world is facing a tough time right now. I know it is not easy and it will take time to get back to normal, but this bad time will also pass. This is not the time to curse the situation but to utilize it to the best. I would like to suggest everybody improve their skills and follow their hobbies/passions. It is not necessarily to be only art, it can be anything. It would be better to follow your passion rather than watching TV or sleeping the whole day. Utilize your creativity, make your own content and learn something new. Also, don’t forget to spend time with your family.

I would also like to suggest that everyone should follow all government rules regarding lockdown as it for your own good reason. Do not go out unnecessarily, wear a mask, keep social distancing, wash your hands frequently, do not trust rumors and fake news, take care of your kids and elders. #Stay Home #Stay Safe

Fav shopping destination:

In my case, there is nothing called “favorite shopping destination”. I shop wherever I go as I am a shopaholic. Being a fashion designer, I have a big obsession with designer clothes, but yeah, I am not a brand conscious. Given an option, I always go for design and comfort instead of brand.
